THAAD is a mobile ground-based ballistic missile defense system designed to intercept short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles in their terminal phase. It uses hit-to-kill interceptors and the AN/TPY-2 radar, sharing sensor infrastructure with the broader Missile Defense Agency architecture.
Batteries are forward-deployed to Guam, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates, and U.S.-based batteries have been surged to the Middle East during escalations with Iran and Houthi forces.
