The AN/TPY-2 is a forward-based X-band phased-array radar used by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency to detect, track, and discriminate ballistic missile threats during their boost and midcourse phases. It operates in a 'forward-based mode' as a sensor cueing other systems, and in 'terminal mode' as THAAD's organic fire-control radar.
Forward-based TPY-2 radars are positioned in Japan, Turkey, Qatar, and Israel, and are key sensors in the integrated U.S. ballistic-missile-defense architecture.
