The LGM-30G Minuteman III is the current silo-based intercontinental ballistic missile component of the U.S. nuclear triad. Four hundred missiles remain on alert across fields in Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, each capable of delivering a W78 or W87 warhead to targets more than 8,000 miles distant.
The Minuteman III has been repeatedly life-extended since first fielding in 1970. The Sentinel ICBM, formerly Ground Based Strategic Deterrent, is the intended successor but has experienced substantial cost growth and schedule slip.
