Starshield is SpaceX's government-focused derivative of the Starlink low-Earth-orbit constellation, providing hardened communications, custom payload hosting, and dedicated satellites for national security customers. Starshield leverages Starlink's mass production and launch cadence to field capability at a cadence traditional GEO programs cannot match.
The NRO has contracted SpaceX for a large classified constellation widely reported to use Starshield buses, and the Space Development Agency has awarded Starshield-derived Transport Layer contracts. Starshield is central to the U.S. government's emerging proliferated-LEO strategy and represents a significant commercial penetration of the military space market.
