The Mobile User Objective System is a five-satellite UHF narrowband SATCOM constellation that delivers cellular-like mobile communications to deployed warfighters, including voice, data, and network connectivity on the move. MUOS replaces the aging UHF Follow-On constellation with a WCDMA waveform modeled on 3G commercial technology.
MUOS supports patrol submarines, surface ships, aircraft, and dismounted ground units through small, handheld-class terminals, and has been a key enabler of Navy Fleet communications. Lockheed Martin is now under contract for MUOS Service Life Extension and ground-system upgrades that will keep the system fielded through the 2030s.
