The Wideband Global SATCOM system is the U.S. military's principal high-capacity communications constellation, supplying X-band and Ka-band connectivity to deployed forces worldwide. Ten WGS satellites operate in geostationary orbit, carrying tactical command-and-control traffic, full-motion video from ISR platforms, and coalition communications for partners including Australia, Canada, Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and New Zealand.
WGS-11+, currently in development by Boeing, introduces digital channelizers and phased-array antennas to substantially increase throughput and anti-jam capability. WGS will be augmented and eventually replaced by the Protected Tactical SATCOM and a proliferated commercial/mil-hybrid architecture.
