The M120 is the U.S. Army's 120mm smoothbore heavy mortar, licensed from the Israeli Soltam K6 design and produced by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. It serves in both the ground-mounted M120 configuration and the vehicle-mounted M121 configuration on the M1064 Mortar Carrier and the M1287 Mortar Carrier Vehicle version of the AMPV.
The 120mm provides a battalion-level indirect fire capability reaching roughly 7 kilometers with conventional rounds and substantially farther with the precision-guided XM395 Accelerated Precision Mortar Initiative round. It is a critical responsive fires asset that fills the gap between 81mm company mortars and 155mm howitzers.
