The M113 is a boxy, aluminum-armored tracked personnel carrier first fielded in 1960, produced in tens of thousands of vehicles over its career and exported to more than 50 countries. The M113A3 variant is the U.S. Army's current configuration, featuring a more powerful engine and improved drivetrain.
The M113 serves as an ambulance, mortar carrier, command post, engineer vehicle, and general-purpose utility platform inside heavy brigade combat teams. Its tactical successor, the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), is now in full-rate production at BAE Systems' York, Pennsylvania plant and will gradually retire M113s from frontline formations.
