The M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System is a gas-operated 7.62x51mm precision rifle developed by Knight's Armament Company around an AR-10-pattern receiver set. It replaces the bolt-action M24 in the designated marksman and precision sniper role, giving squads the ability to engage multiple targets out to 800 meters without cycling a bolt.
The follow-on M110A1 Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, based on Heckler & Koch's HK417/G28, is lighter and more compact than the original M110 and has been fielded to U.S. Army squad designated marksmen. Both systems remain in service alongside the newer Mk 22 Advanced Sniper Rifle, filling different points on the precision-fires spectrum.
