The M107 Long Range Sniper Rifle is the Barrett M82A1 .50 BMG semi-automatic anti-materiel rifle in U.S. military form, adopted in 2002 after extensive operational use by special operations and EOD units. It fires the .50 caliber Browning Machine Gun cartridge from a 10-round magazine at effective ranges past 1,800 meters, defeating soft-skinned vehicles, light materiel, and enemy equipment beyond the reach of 7.62mm rifles.
Ronnie Barrett's privately developed semi-auto .50 caliber design created an entirely new class of infantry weapon in the 1980s, and the M107 institutionalized it as part of the sniper section's standard load. It remains in service alongside the newer Mk 22 Advanced Sniper Rifle, which takes over the anti-personnel role while the M107 retains the anti-materiel niche.
