The FGM-148 Javelin is the U.S. infantry's fire-and-forget top-attack anti-tank guided missile, a replacement for the wire-guided M47 Dragon. The weapon's imaging infrared seeker allows a gunner to lock onto a target before launch, and then either attack in top-attack mode to defeat weak turret top armor, or direct-attack mode against bunkers and soft targets.
Javelin is produced by a joint venture of Raytheon and Lockheed Martin at facilities in Tucson and Troy, and the weapon became a strategic symbol of Western military aid after its heavy use by Ukrainian forces against Russian armored columns in 2022. Production has been substantially surged to rebuild stockpiles and support allied orders.
