The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is the U.S. Navy's carrier-based airborne early warning and control aircraft, operating as the 'quarterback' of the carrier air wing. Its APY-9 UHF rotodome radar offers long-range detection of cruise missiles and stealthy targets, and the aircraft serves as the airborne battle management node linking the strike group.
Compared with earlier E-2 variants the D-model adds aerial refueling capability, a glass cockpit, and integration with the Naval Integrated Fire Control–Counter Air (NIFC-CA) architecture, enabling over-the-horizon targeting for SM-6 missiles fired from Aegis surface combatants. The E-2D is also operated by Japan and France.
