The M109 family is the primary self-propelled artillery system of the U.S. Army, first fielded in 1963 and upgraded continuously through the current M109A7 Paladin Integrated Management variant. The A7 retains the legacy 155mm cannon but adds a new hull, engine, suspension, and digital electronics to ensure commonality with the Bradley.
The Paladin provides divisional and brigade-level indirect fire and has been exported widely. Replacement plans have included the canceled Crusader, the canceled NLOS-C, and the recently canceled Extended Range Cannon Artillery program, leaving the A7 as the enduring backbone.
