The M2 Browning .50 caliber heavy machine gun, nicknamed 'Ma Deuce,' has been in continuous U.S. service longer than any firearm except the Colt 1911. The modern M2A1 variant introduces a quick-change barrel with fixed headspace and timing, removing the most dangerous legacy task in operating the weapon and allowing crews to keep sustained .50-caliber fire on targets out to 2,000 meters.
General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems produces the M2A1 for all four services, and the weapon is issued on tripod mounts, vehicle cupolas, crew-served ring mounts, and remote weapon stations such as the CROWS and Protector. Despite the rise of 25mm and larger chain guns, the M2's range, penetration, and dead-reliable logistics keep it central to U.S. doctrine.
