The M240 is the U.S. military's 7.62x51mm NATO general-purpose machine gun, adopted in the 1990s as the Army replacement for the Vietnam-era M60 and derived from FN Herstal's MAG 58. It fires belts at 650 to 950 rounds per minute from open-bolt gas operation and equips infantry weapons squads, vehicle coax mounts, and aviation door-gun stations across every service.

The lightweight M240L variant uses titanium components to shave almost five pounds from the legacy B model while keeping logistical commonality, and it is the baseline weapon on the M2A4 Bradley, M113 variants, AH-64 door kits, and hundreds of tactical vehicles. Together with the M249 and M250, the M240 completes the Army's crew-served small-arms triad.
