The LAV-25 is the Marine Corps' eight-wheeled light armored reconnaissance vehicle, serving as the primary mount of Light Armored Reconnaissance battalions. Derived from the Swiss MOWAG Piranha I, the LAV family includes the LAV-25 turreted reconnaissance vehicle, LAV-C2 command, LAV-L logistics, LAV-M mortar, LAV-AT anti-tank, and LAV-R recovery variants.
The LAV-25A2 upgrade added digital fire control, thermal optics, and improved survivability. The Marine Corps has begun planning a future Advanced Reconnaissance Vehicle (ARV) as a long-term LAV replacement, though the program has gone through multiple scope changes as the service absorbs Force Design 2030 priorities.
