The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle replaced the Army's M151 jeep and a family of light trucks, becoming the workhorse of U.S. ground forces through the 1990s and 2000s with roles spanning troop transport, ambulance, communications, and weapons carrier.
Combat experience in Iraq and Afghanistan exposed the Humvee's IED vulnerability, driving emergency up-armor kits and ultimately the fielding of MRAP vehicles and, later, the JLTV. The Humvee remains in large-scale service for non-combat and rear-area roles, with tens of thousands still fielded.
AM General has continued to deliver new and remanufactured Humvees; a planned Saber variant and various hybrid-electric demonstrators signal that the platform will stay relevant for years.
