Conventional Prompt Strike is the Navy's sea-launched hypersonic weapon, sharing the Common Hypersonic Glide Body with the Army's LRHW program. First deployment is planned aboard Zumwalt-class destroyers after their Advanced Gun Systems are removed and replaced with vertical launch tubes, and CPS will be fielded subsequently aboard Block V Virginia-class attack submarines through the Virginia Payload Module.
CPS gives the Navy a survivable, prompt theater-strike weapon that can operate from a forward submarine posture without the political costs of land basing, complementing Tomahawk Block V in the Pacific distributed maritime strike portfolio. Joint development with the Army has been credited with cost and schedule benefits despite the program's overall technical difficulty.
