The AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel is an X-band 3D phased-array radar that provides the eyes for the Army's Integrated Air Defense System at the short-range tier. It detects and tracks cruise missiles, manned aircraft, helicopters, and increasingly uncrewed aircraft and then hands data to shooters such as NASAMS, IM-SHORAD Stryker, Avenger, and the Indirect Fire Protection Capability launcher.
The A3 upgrade brings new processors, gallium-nitride transmit-receive modules, and improved clutter rejection, while the larger LTAMDS program will eventually replace Sentinel as the Patriot's fire-control radar. Sentinel remains a core Army surveillance radar and has been exported widely, including to NASAMS customers across NATO and to Ukraine.
