The AN/FPS-132 Upgraded Early Warning Radar is a UHF phased-array radar derived from the Cold War PAVE PAWS and Ballistic Missile Early Warning System antennas, but modernized by Raytheon to serve both strategic missile warning and the U.S. homeland and regional ballistic missile defense mission. Sites at Beale AFB, Cape Cod, Thule, Fylingdales, and Clear AFS form the outer ring of sensors feeding the Missile Defense Agency's command and control network.
The Space Force operates the UEWRs as part of its integrated tactical warning and attack assessment enterprise, and upgrades have extended their ability to discriminate ICBM warheads from decoys and to cue Ground-Based Interceptors at Fort Greely and Vandenberg. The fleet continues to receive sustainment funding as MDA scales the adjacent LRDR and HDR-H programs.
