The Zumwalt-class is a three-ship class of stealth guided-missile destroyers featuring a tumblehome hull form, integrated power system, and extensive automation that reduces crew size to roughly 150 sailors. The original 155mm Advanced Gun System was canceled, and the ships are being refitted to host Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic missiles starting with USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000).
The class was truncated from an initial 32-ship program to three hulls largely due to unit costs exceeding $7 billion and mission refinement around anti-surface warfare rather than land attack.
