The M4 Carbine is the standard-issue service carbine for most U.S. ground forces, firing 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition from a 14.5-inch barrel. The current M4A1 variant features a heavier profile barrel, fully automatic selector, and ambidextrous controls.
Millions of M4s have been produced by Colt, FN America, and Remington over the carbine's career. The Army's Next Generation Squad Weapon program selected the SIG Sauer XM7 rifle as a partial replacement for close-combat forces, though the M4 will remain in service for the majority of soldiers for decades.
