The Maneuver Short-Range Air Defense system mounts a Leonardo DRS Mission Equipment Package, with four Stinger missiles, two Longbow Hellfire missiles, a 30mm XM914 chain gun, and a 7.62mm machine gun on a Stryker A1 chassis. The system closes the short-range air defense gap in Army maneuver formations that lapsed after the Cold War.
First battalions fielded in 2021 to the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Europe. A directed-energy variant (DE M-SHORAD) fitting a 50-kilowatt laser is in parallel development, giving the platform an affordable counter-UAS and counter-rocket capability alongside kinetic defeat.
